He must have a VERY NICE camera… is what I would have replied 15 years ago if you asked me to look at these photos. Now if you told me all kinds of cameras took these photos I would have been confused for sure. Wait I thought the MegaPixels count slapped on the box of a camera made the results? We’re quick to forget where we come from aren’t we? I love to learn new skills but it’s almost impossible to realise the impact those skills will have on my life in 2, 5 or 10+ years. Not a single piece of gear can help teach us to think in terms of stories and impact. Im excited for March 11th, when some of you will go through my next photography training to learn how to move from “snapping” photos to creating impactful images. I don’t believe in sitting still in a classroom watching hours of videos to learn something as “hands on” as photography, so I designed my 30 Days To Great Photos program like a workout training plan for your photographer skills. Step by step, every day, essential lessons and missions are designed to create deep changes in how you observe, visualize and document your environment. *Pause: I’m not good at writing posts to promo my offers but this was my attempt. 😂 Sometimes I just want to write: “look I’ve been running this course for years now, had over 3,000 participants and the feedback has been incredible but most importantly what people created through it has been the most impressive - I actually look at some of the first participants with awe and feel inspired by their work. Which ones are shot on a phone? 🧐
What if I told you I shot them all on mobile? I’ve been toying with the #OnePlusOpen recently and these are some of my favorites. Over the years I’ve noticed that if I want to create photos I love, I have to switch my mindset from “snapping” to “creating” especially with a phone. Let me explain. The difference between “snapping” and “creating” may simply be 10 or 15 seconds but those few seconds are the most important. They allow me to observe, visualize, test different frames and find what works best. This may mean moving two feet to the left, getting slightly lower angle or moving my phone’s camera by 1/2 a cm to get some flare in my image to support my story. Don’t underestimate the power of your mindset when you take photos everyday with what you have in your pocket. PS. I’ve put together 5 Everyday Photography techniques you can use do with your phone.
